During a Greco-Roman wrestling match in Cedar Rapids, Layne was legally thrown — a move he had experienced many times before. But this time, he didn’t get back up. Layne landed on the back of his head, causing a devastating injury to his neck. At the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, doctors determined that Layne had suffered fractures and dislocations of his C6 and C7 vertebrae. Following surgery, he had no feeling or movement from the chest down. While he retained movement in his arms, he had little hand function. Since that day, Layne has worked incredibly hard through therapy. He has gained strength in his arms and is beginning to see small improvements in his hands. Every bit of progress is a step forward. Now, Layne and his family are facing a new set of challenges. Their current home is a rental, which greatly limits the accessibility modifications they can make. Transportation is another major concern. Layne’s youngest brother also uses a wheelchair, making the family’s vehicle needs especially specific.
